Got tagged (How I love it!)

Wednesday, 30. April 2008

Shefaly tagged me… Thank you! I love those things and it’s been a long while since I filled one out…

1. Last movie you saw in a theater?

The Dragon Hunters. But I wanna go tonight… Probably to see Be Kind, Rewind…

2. What book are you reading?

Surprisingly, only two: Kafka on the Shore (Haruki Murakami) and Lilith (Christoph Marzi)

3. Favorite board game?

I’m more of a card playing person. But I do like The Settlers of Catan (even though I always lose).

4. Favorite magazine?

I’m not into magazines that much. But I like BuchKultur (Book Culture, about books and writers) and Profil (political, I only read it at my parents’, because they get it sent home…)

5. Favorite smells?

Coffee, Lemongrass, Miracle by Lancome, one bush with white flowers that I don’t know the name of (Isuck at plants)….

6. Favorite sounds?

The sounds of a library – pages rustling, the occasional cough, concentration. The sound of someone sleeping next to me.

7. Worst feeling in the world?

Being helpless. Being tired but not being able to sleep.

8. What is the first thing you think of when you wake up?

Is it time to get up already????

9. Favorite fast food place?

I don’t eat a lot of fast food (unless you count the microwave meals from the supermarket) but when I do, it’s usually McDonald’s (yes, I know, I’m evil) or I get a Döner Kebab from one of the thousand places in Vienna.

10. Future child’s name?

I’d love to call a son Jukka, but it’s no good in Austria (because of the Yucca palm that’s pronounced exactly the same). So I settled on Gregor (boy) and Ava (girl). And if there’s more children, the father probably gets a say in it, too :)

11. Finish this statement. “If I had lot of money I’d….?

travel, get everything on the wishlist and buy a house (because then I’d need the place for my stuff)

12. Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?

Yes. But I’m trying to get them out. They are so damn clingy, it’s hard. :P If only I could remember to buy mothballs, I could finally put them in the box I already have…

13. Storms – cool or scary?

cool, as long as they don’t destroy stuff.

14. Favorite drink?

Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. Water. Diet Coke. Ice Tea.

15. Finish this statement, “If I had the time I would….”?

see my friends more, my family more, write a book, travel.

16. Do you eat the stems on broccoli?

Yes, why not?

17. If you could dye your hair any color, what would be your choice?

I’m past that… My hair’s the average European brown and I got to like that. But I had it blond, red, blue (which turned to green after a while). Probably I should dye it pink, just because I’ve never done that before.

18. Name all the different cities/towns you’ve lived in?

Vienna (Austria), Großwarasdorf (Austria), Vienna (Austria), St. Petersburg (Russia), Vienna (Austria), Mococa (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Vienna (Austria), Kinshasa (DR Congo), Vienna (Austria)

19. Favorite sports to watch?

Rugby, Gaelic Football (not that we get too much of that in Austria…), Football World Cup.

20. One nice thing about the person who sent this to you?

I don’t know Shefaly that well yet, but she seems like a smart woman. And she sent me this.

21. What’s under your bed?

My wardrobe.

22. Would you like to be born as yourself again?

Depends on what my other options are. I like my life, so yes. But I’d find it extremely interesting to live the life of a squirrel.

23. Morning person, or night owl?

Night Owl. But if you define “Morning” as the time you wake me up after a good “night” of sleep (so around noon), I’m a morning person as well :)

24. Over easy, or sunny side up?

Scrambled.

25. Favorite place to relax?

Starbucks. My sofa.

26. Favorite pie?

Sachertorte… (ok, not really a pie but a cake). Apple pie. Red currant pie.

27. Favorite ice cream flavor?

I’ll go with the classic rasberry and hazelnut combination…

28. Of all the people you tagged this to, who’s most likely to respond first?

I’m not sure because of different time zones and life/work styles. Probably deadra or L.

I’ll tag bApH, Deadra, indisch, L., presti and Swen. That’s six, I know. Too bad, but I wanna know from everyone :)

One Million Blogs

Tuesday, 29. April 2008

I just found out about this. These people are trying to see how long it will take to get 1.000.000 blogs listed. They started on April 10th and I just entered the list with #1146.

A similar thing, but without the ultimate goal of one million and a bit younger is the Wiki Blog Directory. There you can list your blog according to categories.

Social projects for today: check. :)

[PS: I know that I'm a huge list freak... I just love them.]

Co-Workers

Tuesday, 29. April 2008

I like my co-workers. I really do. They are nice and I can talk to them and we can share a laugh. But sometimes they are just plain weird.

Yesterday, one of them told me that on sunday, she drove to her usual gas station. She always goes there because they have service. But since a week or so, on sundays, there’s no service anymore. And my colleague didn’t know that before. Problem is: She doesn’t know how to fuel her car.

I sat there with my mouth open.

“You don’t know how to fuel a car?”

“No, I’ve never done it before. Do you?”

“Yes, regularly. I also change oil and refill the windshield wash fluid [However you call that].”

“Well, I refill the windshield wash fluid, too. But I never fueled a car.”

“So what did you do?”

“I called my father and asked him if he could come to the gas station and explain it to me. But he doesn’t know how to fuel a car, either. Then I just drove to the other gas station. But they didn’t have service either. Then I came back to the first station and there was this young guy. So I asked him if he could show me how to do it.”

“And did he?”

“He just filled it up himself.”

WordPress?

Monday, 28. April 2008

WordPress has this new features with related posts… Interesting idea but how they get the relation isn’t really clear to me.

For example, for my entry from friday about the family, they suggest a post with the lyrics of “Hips don’t lie”. Huh?

Artsy and Less Artsy Movies

Monday, 28. April 2008

I went with my little nephew Y (he’s 3 and a half) to the movies this weekend and we watched Dragon Hunters. He’s a huge fan of the TV series, I think I’ve seen half an episode once. Apart from my nephew who’s as cute as he’s hilarious (“All day, I have to fight, you know. Dragons are everywhere… In kindergarten, at home, in the car, at granny’s place…”, “My dad is not a dragon hunter… he’s only a pirate.”), the experience was not so much for my enjoyment. Which is ok, since I took Y and not myself. But there are a lot of animated movies marketed for children but aimed at adults (Shrek comes to mind) and this is not one of them.
There are some beautifully made sequences (the opening credits for example, and a lot of the backgrounds – I’m a sucker for the flying islands) but the characters look weird.

I guess, it’s one of the films I’m just too late for. If I had grown up with the TV series, things might have been different.

[Almost totally off topic: Writer/director's name is Arthur Qwak. Does anybody else think this is a pseudonym to honour Alfred J. Kwak?]

——

This weekend also provided me with the opportunity to finally see Mar Adentro (yes, I know, I’m a bad movie goer for not having seen it earlier. No cookie for me). As expected, it was good. Javier Bardem was brilliant as usual and I really liked the lighting and colours.

What I didn’t expect was that I didn’t cry all the time, but almost every scene with Ramón’s father made me cry.

And I really liked about it that it was honest (or at least it felt honest). I didn’t feel like they wanted to corner me and force their point of view on me [I'm not even entirely sure what their point of view is].

Last but not least we have Léolo.

Léolo is weird. It is touching. It is outspoken. All things I very much like about movies. It has some very interesting and good ideas. It has a very nice soundtrack.

But for me, it falls under the category “is good but could have been better if it was not trying so hard”.

Weekend

Monday, 28. April 2008

After I heroically saved my parents from the cruel fate of taking a train home from the airport, I spent the whole weekend at their place. It was wonderful, filled with sunshine, flowers, nephews & nieces and puppies. [My mother's dog just had puppies.]

Anyway, now I’m back and although there’s still sunshine there’s also nothing to do, boring meetings and internal accounting. :(

sigh

Friday, 25. April 2008

I mentioned already that you should never, ever travel with my family, didn’t I? Well, here comes another chapter in the long History of Chaos in the Family V.

My parents are in Usbekistan at the moment, they spent the last week there, on holidays nonetheless. (jealous? who? me? nah. not at all.) They will return tonight. They were supposed to drive to the airport, leave the car there and then drive back. They didn’t do that. Instead sister #5* drove them to the airport last week and brother #2** was supposed to pick them up tonight.

Turns out, brother #2 has to work tonight so he can’t do that anymore. So he calls sister #5 and tells her she has to pick up the parents.
But sister #5 has her first day of work (what’s more a trial day) tonight, so she can’t pick them up either.
So, sis #5 calls sis #2 and asks her if she can pick up the parents. Sis #2 had a baby in december and the baby girl’s sick and the father’s not there, so she has to take care of the sick baby and their son, which means she isn’t really able to drive.
Sis #2 wants to call sis #3, because she lives close to the airport but sis #3 is working and doesn’t answer the phone (she’s an anaesthesist so she has a good excuse). And anyway, sis #3 will go to Amsterdam tonight (nobody knows exactly when), so she could probably drive her car in time to the airport and meet the parents, give them the keys and fly off (but how would she get the car back? and what if she doesn’t have the time to do that?).
So, sis #2 calls sis #1and asks her if she could drive. But for sis #1 it would mean a solid three hours of driving (in circles – Vienna – Airport – Katzelsdorf – Vienna) and she has a small son as well, so she’s not too keen on the idea.
Well, sis #2 and sis #1 both call me (I’m sis #4 btw, in case you wondered), simultaneously to make it more fun. Now, I’m the one who has to pick up the parents, but I don’t have a car. So I call sis #3 to see when her flight is and if I could borrow her car and maybe drop her off at the airport as well, but sis #3 is still working and therefore not answering her phone, so I don’t know for sure (I don’t think it will be a problem, but who knows, maybe her flight is in the afternoon or really late or the car is broke, which wouldn’t be the first time). And anyway, I would have uni today (from three to six and from six thirty to ten thirty).

So I’m wondering now: Do I go to the first unit and leave after that? Do I leave in the middle of the second unit? What if my sister’s flight is earlier? I still need to get home before going to the airport because if I drive to Katzelsdorf tonight, I will stay there for the weekend to make it worth my while. So, should I skip uni altogether today? But I promised a friend that I would explain her some things from internal accounting. What if I can’t borrow sis #3′s car? Why the hell did brother #2 “borrow” my parent’s car when he didn’t have a license yet and now isn’t allowed to make the license for some time and can’t pick up the parents? Why is sis #6 too young to have a license?

And why the hell is all of that suddenly my problem?

Buttons

Friday, 25. April 2008

Some of you might have noticed the two new buttons in the sidebar.

One is for Towel Day (25th of May), a tribute to Douglas Adams. If you want to participate, all you have to do is carry a towel with you the whole day. Douglas Adams is well worth it to do that, I think. Plus, as we all know from the Hitchhiker’s Guide Towels always come in handy.

The other is for fuelmyblog. That’s a blog directory I’m trying out since two days. Up til now I’m not very convinced. The handling is awkward, you end up clicking in rounds because you can’t get where you want in one single click, and a lot of the blogs are dead and have not been updated for a long time (but still show up under the first hits).
Well, I’ll give it another week or so but if things aren’t better (read: I found some cool blogs there and got used to the navigation), I’ll kick it right out again.

InterWorld (Neil Gaiman & Michael Reaves)

Tuesday, 22. April 2008

InterWorld is ok. It’s not Neil Gaiman’s best book (have never read anything else by Michael Reaves so I can’t say about him), but it’s still better than your average children’s Fantasy/SciFi book (by the way: question: where do you draw the line between SciFi and Fantasy?).

It’s about Joey Harker who has the phenomenal ability to get lost, anywhere. But one day he discovers that he’s a Walker – he can Walk between the different earth versions in parallel universes. He then gets sucked into the fight between Science and Magic which both want to claim as many earths as possible for themselves and joins an army of Joeys from different worlds.

There are some great ideas – like Scarabus, a man who’s fully tattooed. Each tattoo represents something and when he touches them, this something happens. For example, one of the tats is a ship and when he touches it, the ship appears.
Another thing I loved was Hue, a multidimensional (more than 3 dimensions) being that looks to people like us (who are only able to see 3 dimensions) like a bubble and changes colours according to his mood.

What I didn’t like about it was that there were some questions left unanswered.

[SPOILER WARNING]

How come that the Binary were never involved in the fighting? The HEX are plannig to take over a lot of worlds and there aren’t even any counterforces of the Binary?

How come that the squid (Kevin) knew Hues name? Hue could only communicate through colours? How could he have let Kevin know about the name Joey gave him?

[SPOILER END]

It seems a bit as if both of them thought that the book was going on too long and that they just wanted to finish it. Or maybe they ran out of time. Anyway, something’s missing.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still worth a read and I don’t think that kids (and it is a kids’ book) will necessarily notice what I observed. But it won’t be one of my favourites.
