Easy A (2010)
Friday, 31. December 2010Easy A is Will Gluck‘s newest film, starring Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes, Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Malcolm McDowell, Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow.
Plot:
Olive (Emma Stone) is a good student, though not a particularly popular one. But when a rumor is started that she sleeps around, it puts a quick end to her going unnoticed. Olive gets into a catfight with the religious do-gooder Marianne (Amanda Bynes), poses as a sex partner for various guys (who are gay or unpopular) and causes general mayhem at her school.
Easy A is a thoroughly enjoyable film. Though I expected a little more than it actually was, I had a good time watching and it makes for a nice evening’s entertainment.
Easy A has a few things going for it. Mostly, it has a well-written script (by Bert V. Royal) with snappy, funny dialogue and a layered protagonist.
It also has an excellent cast in Emma Stone (who was very good, though I’m not as excited about her performance as other people seem to be) and especially Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson (no surprise there). They were basically the most awesome parents ever.
They had fun with drawing the parallels between the plot of the film and The Scarlett Letter, and they nicely acknowledge it, which makes it not only bearable (in contrast to most other high school movies), but with their ironic treatment of it even fun.
Still, it was a little too clichéd in it’s structure and plot to make for a really fantastic film, though it did make for a nice send-up of the usual teen movie fare.
Summarising: Very watchable.
I enjoyed this one immensely.
I agree with you about Tucci and Clarkson, and that English lit teacher was great.
But it did kind of cement my opinion that American high schools are HELL ON EARTH.
So true about American high schools. After all these movies depicting that, I really don’t know why there are still so many exchange students who want to go to the US.
